The states of Connecticut, New Jersey and New York have announced that visitors from 31 other states must self-quarantine for two weeks.
The announcement comes as the number of patients continue to increase in more than 40 states around the US.
New York governor Andrew Cuomo contrasted the deteriorating situation of the other states with the improving status of his state, thanking the work of New Yorkers and controlled reopening measures as the factor behind the successful reopening of the state.
Announcing that there were only two deaths in the state on Monday, the governor said that it was the lowest mortality rate reported since the pandemic broke out.
The initial wave of travel advisories was announced on June 24th in order to restrict the spread of the virus. It was shortly after the state rebounded and recovered after being hit the most severely by the pandemic.
Prior to the announcement, there was already a list of 22 states in which out of state travelers had to quarantine themselves. With the addition of 10 more states, now more than half of the nation must self-isolate in order to enter the state.
The addition and removal of states on the list is a good indicator of how a given state is doing in regards to Covid-19. For instance, Delaware was newly added to the list after it was removed after a week. On the other hand, Minnesota was removed from the list for the first time.
Visitors from states with a positivity rate of greater than 10% over a seven day period are regulated by this rule. In New York, anyone who is caught violating the rules must incur a $2,000 fine.
Initially, the travel advisory only affected 9 states such as Texas which have emerged as new epicenters for the virus. However, as the US goes through the dreaded second wave, an increasing number of states have been affected by the regulation.
In an interview with NBC, Governor Cuomo shared his surprise with how worse the situation in the US has unfolded. Cuomo said that he never imagined that the situation will be this bad.
