Weddings are an occasion which symbolizes love and harmony but plantations do not represent any such thing so the two biggest online wedding planners are negating the use of plantations at a wedding.
According to them, this thing represents the slave plantations and they themselves are revising their policies.
The owner of Wedding fire and Knot which is The Knot is giving guidelines and ensuring that the ones who plan weddings do not romanticize the southern plantation history as explained by the Chief marketing officer Dhanusa Sivajee.
The use of words such as elegant and charming refer to slavery and Sivajee said that they aim to deliver each and every wedding couple without discriminating among them.
These language instructions will be applied to the venues of the wedding as well as to the Knot websites.
However, Pinterest’s spokesperson said that they have decided to restrict the plantation wedding content on their website and said that weddings are known to be symbolizing love, unity, and harmony but plantations do not show anything like that.
They say that their policy will be to limit the use and distribution of planation content through Pinterest will stop advertising such concepts.
Few civil rights activation groups such as the Color of change are provoking different companies to stop plantations as they represent slavery.
This group wrote on its site as ” The plantation glorification will not encourage and empower Black women and justice-minded people”.
They also sent a letter to Pinterest as ” This is the most horrific human right abuses and wedding industry promote plantations by denying the violent conditions black people face”.
The knot worldwide and color of change will work together to bring new guidelines and are planning to release their new policy in a few weeks.
Plantation weddings are known as romantic weddings and are one of the popular wedding locations.
Some of the actors such as Blake lively, Ryan Reynolds did a plantation wedding at Boone hall plantation and it is the place where many black people were enslaved.
Hence the color of change is making the public aware of the disrespect to black people as they should not romanticize forced labor camps.
According to IBIS World, the revenue which the US wedding industry made in 2019 is $76 billion and an average wedding costs $30,000.
However, Colour of change sent some letters to Zola, Martha Stewarts, weddings and Brides as well.
To which Zola removed some plantation wedding references but after some complaints and clarification, they removed all the references.
Color of Changes says that this step won’t completely change this concept but this will be a cornerstone in making the public aware of such disrespect towards slaves.
