A New York City nurse was arrested on Thursday for reportedly stealing credit card of a patient who was dying from deadly COVID-19, then using the money to purchase groceries and gas.
43-year old Danielle Conti is facing multiple charges that include petit larceny, criminal possession of the stolen property, and grand larceny.
According to the NYPD report, Conti used to work in Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH), where 70-year Anthony Catapano died of COVID-19 on April 12th, 2020. His wife of 36 years died in 2014, post which he used to lived with the daughter.
Catapano’s daughter Tara told the news that from the beginning, she knew that the crime was committed by someone from within the employee, there is no way this could have been done from anyone outside.
However, she also told someone that it might not be a nurse or doctor.
She further added that the woman was someone who was supposed to look after her father. She went in there and handed her father’s medicine and then she thought about where his wallet went.
Danielle Conti has been temporarily suspended and facing termination to felony charges. SIUH is working closely with the hospital and law enforcement authorities and conducting an investigation. She has been working in the hospital since 2007.
Tara said that it was already a difficult time for her after losing her dad to the deadly virus. She thought he would be treated and coming home soon.
Tara also assured her father that he would be coming home as he kept asking when he will be able to do so. Dealing with this on top of the loss she is already going through has been heartbreaking.
She concluded by saying that she wants this story to be shared in public so that people stay aware of what’s happening. It is important that people are informed so that they can protect themselves and their loved ones.
