Eric Sartori worked in the COVID-19 unit of the community hospital in Arizona.
He arrived home on April 19 after finishing his duty. He read a Facebook post where a person claimed that the virus was a hoax. That’s when Eric decided to open Facebook and vent.
He wrote that as the world is struggling to cope with losses of COVID-19, people are growingly concerned about the conspiracy theory BS that is becoming a bigger problem. He also urged that people who don’t know exactly about the situation must keep quiet rather than spreading rumors.
Sartori was working in a hospital and spending time with his family a month ago. He posted about his work and urban farm on Facebook, where he had over 5000 followers. Now, Eric was facing death threats and constantly telling him that the virus was a hoax.
Eric added that he is being personally attacked by people on social media. While fighting with COVID-19, helping patients, and worrying about their own health, workers like Eric are standing at the front line of corona information wars.
Be it on social media or outside it, health care workers are constantly dealing with conspiracy theories about the corona. In countries like India, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, rumors are taking a severe turn leading to people assaulting health care workers.
It is a grave concern for nurses who are constantly compromising their own health and helping patients to recover their health. Yet, they have to face such consequences.
Sartori’s Facebook post about the conspiracy was shared 22,000 times. People have come forward to support Eric, but it has further attracted the attackers. Sartori added in his next post that he is sympathetic towards the people who are mistrusting the medical sector.
Eric said that it was after arguing with a person on Facebook about the coronavirus as hoax he realized how different a pandemic situation is.
Laura, a nurse from the hospital in North Carolina, said that it is really sad how people aren’t trusting medical professionals. She said that she has also been facing such issues after the COVID-19 outbreak.
