A 34-year-old nurse who was working on the coronavirus treatment frontlines has taken her own life after being diagnosed with COVID-19.
According to The National Federation of Nurses of Italy, Daniela Trezzi, who worked at a Lombardy hospital, was under “heavy stress” after learning that she had been infected with the novel coronavirus.
Fearing that she may have infected other people while doing her best to save lives, the 34-year-old took her life after getting diagnosed with COVID-19.
As The Daily Mail reported, Trezzi, who was working at Hospital San Gerardo, had been quarantined after she started exhibiting symptoms of the disease and tested positive for coronavirus.
Following days of self-isolation, during which the nurse was “not under surveillance” according to the hospital manager Mario Alparone, Trezzi is believed to have taken her own life.
“Each of us has chosen this profession for good and, unfortunately, also for bad: we are nurses. The condition and stress to which our professionals are subjected is under the eyes of all,” The National Federation of Nurses of Italy said in a statement according to The Daily Mail.
In addition, the federation, which expressed “pain and dismay” over the nurse’s death, has claimed that a similar suicide case involving a nurse has previously occurred in Venice.
The tragic deaths came as a Fondation GIMBE, a research institute in Italy, has revealed that around 5,700 health professionals in the country had been infected with the killer virus.
