Nurses were spotted wearing bin bags in an attempt to protect themselves from the deadly coronavirus at a hospital overwhelmed by the influx of patients.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the hospitals that declared an emergency is London’s Northwick Park Hospital where the beds were filled with patients and the staff have allegedly been running out of basic protective gear.
After requesting nearby health institutions to take in some of their patients, the Northwick Park Hospital staff issued a heartbreaking online plea in which they opened up about the insufficient supply of protective gear.
“We are so disheartened with what we face day by day, night by night,” a caption of one of the photos in which nurses are seen wearing trash bags over their bodies and on their heads read.
“Improvising PPEs (Personal Protective Equipment) to at least try to protect us from our infectious patients, buying our own wellington boots that is said to be reimbursed. This is how our prime minister says that we are stockpiling PPEs!
“We have to stay brave for our colleagues who are off sick, families and our patients. It just made us cry inside but we show brave and smiling faces to everyone.”
After the plea went viral, people applauded the nurses for staying brave during these tough times and urged the authorities to take action to provide hospitals with adequate protective gear and resources necessary to ensure the staffs’ safety.
One of the nurses who chose to stay anonymous also spoke out to The Daily Telegraph and explained how her own family is afraid to see her because she could’ve been exposed to the killer bug at her work.
“We could catch the virus ourselves. We need proper PPE kit now, or nurses and doctors are going to die. It’s as simple as that,” she said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.
