While most of us only have to stay in the comfort of our homes to help fight the war against coronavirus, healthcare workers are working 13 or more hours treating patients in the ICU.
Nurses and doctors have shared photos of them with red marks and bruises on their faces after working day and night, but many of them revealed they don’t consider themselves ‘heroes.’ They just want people to understand the hardships they face amid coronavirus pandemic.
Dr. Nicola Sgarbi from Italy shared a picture on Facebook after treating coronavirus in the ICU for 13 hours. The photo shows how goggles left red marks on the bridge of his nose and under his eyes.
“I don’t love selfies. Yesterday, though, I took this photo. After 13 hours in ICU after taking off all my protective devices, I took a selfie,” he wrote.
“I am not and I don’t feel like a hero. I am a normal person, who loves his job and who, now more than ever, is proud and proud to do it by giving all himself on the forefront lines together with other wonderful people (doctors, nurses, technicians, cleaners).”
His post quickly went viral, with over 74,000 shares and more than 240,000 reactions.
In an interview with CNN, Sgarbi said: “I mainly took the photo for two reasons. Firstly, to send it to my partner, to tell her that I had finished my shift at work and that I was on my way home, slightly bruised.
“Secondly, to show it to my 1-year-old daughter when she will have grown up. I will be telling her about this moment.”
25-year-old Sherry Dong, a registered nurse at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, also shared a photo of herself and her co-worker. “Greetings from the front lines of COVID-19 at Johns Hopkins Hospital ICU!” she wrote.
Her post received over 2,200 comments and some Reddit ‘awards.’
In an interview with CNN, Sherry said: “My heart is grateful and my mind is heavy seeing medical professionals all over the world putting themselves at risk battling against this outbreak.
“I think the medical community has found various ways of coping through social media outlets.”
