NYC To Ban Paper Receipts Due To Chemical That May Cause Hormone Related Cancers


New York City lawmakers have planned to introduce a package of new laws to ban the use of most paper receipts.

The ubiquitous rolls of paper that expel from cash registers could be ban soon.

Their sites are now getting set on paper receipts by the members of the City Council, specifically those coated with bisphenol A, or BPA.

The chemical, found on cash register and credit card receipts, has been identified as a dangerous chemical that interacts with human hormones and can cause breast cancer and brain damage.

The city council planning to hold hearings on a package of bills. “Nobody needs foot-long receipts,” said Council Speaker Corey Johnson, a Democrat. “We will work with businesses and consumers to cut out paper receipt waste and protect the planet. Let’s not print receipts when they aren’t wanted, especially when we have the technology to issue environmentally friendly alternatives.”

BPA also presents in everyday plastics such as water bottles, compact discs, plastic dinnerware, and toys, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

People can be easily exposed to BPA after eating food or drinking water from stored containers, according to the CDC.

In order to ban the use of BPA-coated paper, The city council will consider bills in the next few months.

‘It’s definitely a concern,’ said Katherine Reeves, a University of Massachusetts epidemiologist who has researched BPA’s correlation with breast cancer in animals, reports Bloomberg.

She also said, further research suggests it may be associated with autism, obesity and hormone-linked cancers, Bloomberg reports.

‘We need to get rid of those chemicals and also get rid of paper waste’, Council Speaker Corey Johnson said Tuesday on WNYC radio.

A number of new laws, in order to protect the public health, and animal abuses have been considered by the New York lawmakers recently.

The state has officially become the third in the US to ban plastic bags. Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation to institute the ban in April.
