Elijah Cummings, an American politician and a member of the U.
S. House of Representatives, has passed away on October 17, 2019, at the age of 68 after “longstanding health issues” according to his office.
During the eulogy following the tragic passing, Barack Obama paid the politician a tribute and appeared to take a strike at Donald Trump and his previous comments on Cummings’ views with his remarks.
“There’s nothing weak about kindness and compassion. There’s nothing weak about looking out for others. There’s nothing weak about being honorable,” the former president said in his Baltimore speech.
“You’re not a sucker to have integrity and to treat others with respect.”
As Obama added in his heartfelt tribute, he often overcame difficult times during his presidency with the help of Cummings’ advice.
“He was never complacent, for he knew that without clarity of purpose and a steadfast faith and a dogged determination demanded by our liberty, the promise of this nation could wither. Complacency, he knew, was not only corrosive for our collective lives, but for our individual lives,” he expressed.
Continuing, the former POTUS said Cummings was “honorable” long before he officially took on the title by getting elected to office.
“Elijah Cummings came from good soil … [He was] a leader who once said he’d die for his people even as he lived every minute for them. His life validates the things we tell ourselves about what’s possible in this country – not guaranteed, but possible,” Obama added.
Among thousands of mourners were also Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Elizabeth Warren. However, there was no sight of Donald Trump or an official White House representative.
