A police officer tragically passed away after getting struck by a drunk driver while helping control the traffic at a car crash scene.
The incident took place in Dallas, Texas, where an unnamed DPD officer suffered fatal injuries while helping block the incoming traffic at the North Central Expressway following a traffic accident.
While the officer was on duty, a suspected drunk driver reportedly crashed into his vehicle at a high speed even though the cop’s emergency lights were on.
Following the collision, the officer was taken to Baylor Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after.
In photos from the scene of the accident, the officer’s vehicle is seen with great damage to its rear and the driver’s side. While the suspect’s car, Kia Forte, also sustained severe damage, neither the driver nor the co-passenger suffered major injuries.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce that this morning at approximately 0125 an officer, working an accident scene, was struck and killed by a DWI driver. Our department is once again mourning, but we are heartened by the strength of his family. Godspeed my brother,” Dallas Police Department Chief Eddie Garcia wrote.
Following the tragic car crash, the 32-year-old suspect, whom the police described as a black male, has been taken into custody and is facing serious charges.
