Lisa Smith May, a school teacher in Illinois, was driving with her son when a police vehicle started following her.

After realizing she had been speeding, she expected to get an expensive speeding ticket.

Illinois State Police District 17 Trooper Matthew Dalton asked her where she was heading. He listened as she explained that she needed to pick up a small couch for her classroom at Jefferson Elementary School.

May also admitted that she had been prepared to accept the consequence when Dalton asked for her license. However, his response shocked her.

Dalton asked: “You are driving all the way to Earlville to buy a couch for your classroom?”

Impressed with May’s passion for students, Dalton said he would only give her a warning.

“Officer Dalton returned, gave me my license back, and told me just how much he appreciated what teachers do and give out of their own pocketbooks for their classrooms,” May wrote.

But their conversation wasn’t over yet as the trooper asked her how much the furniture was going to cost. May told him the price and was surprised when Dalton took some cash out of his pocket and handed it to her.

“I laughed and told him that I cannot accept a bribe from a police officer! We both laughed!” May said. “He would not take no for an answer. I cried. In fact, I am crying tears of gratitude at this moment!”

She added: “To Officer Dalton, thank you for doing what you do every single day with a smile on your face. You do not know who you will pull over or how they will respond. You take risks every single day. I do not know you or your family, but I truly appreciate your service and I hope that you are safe. Karma can be a beautiful thing. I shall pay it forward.”
