State Police Officer Toby Lafave spotted a driver in a gold Cadillac who was going 96 mph down Interstate 40, weaving dangerously through traffic.
The officer pulled over the female driver and noticed a little girl unbuckled in the front seat.
He asked the woman, Yvonne Ukestine the reason for driving so fast. To which, the woman replied, “I was scared.”
She said that she was scared because of the freeway. The officer asked the woman to get out of the car. She refused and even cut him off when he questioned her.
“I’ve been behind you for a while,” the officer told her.
The woman tried to explain that she had just come out of a concert and was worried for her 6-year-old niece as she was sitting in the front seat.
“I think she’s scared,” she says, in the police video.
“Yeah, I’m sure she is. I’d be afraid, especially the way you were driving. I’d be afraid, too.” the officer replied.
The woman then admitted that she was intoxicated. The officer arrested her.
After putting her in his police unit, the officer found strollers in the trunk of the car. While he was speaking with someone on the phone about picking up the little girl, he saw the little girl trying to close the trunk of the car.
“Hey baby, I’ll get it, I’ll get it,” he told her.
That’s when he got choked up. The officer could barely speak on the phone.
“That makes my heart hurt.”, he said to another officer.
“God, it breaks my heart,” he said while going back to his patrol car.
The woman was charged with driving while impaired. She was also charged with child abuse.
