When Michael Rivers came across a homeless lady while on duty, the kindhearted cop decided to have her something to eat.
The officer, from the Goldsboro Police Department in North Carolina, knew almost every face in the small town that’s why he was alarmed on encountering someone who he had never seen before.
The 29-year-old told CNN that it came to his mind to ask the lady if she has eaten something or not.
“God put it on my heart to get her lunch,” he said. “So I turned around and I asked her, ‘Hey, did you eat today?’ And she said, ‘No’.”
The officer then shared pepperoni and cheese pizzas with the woman, named Michelle.
A woman named Cassie Lea Parker was on her lunch break when she passed by there and observed Michael eating and talking with a miserable looking homeless.
She captured the scene on a snap that was later shared on social media by her husband, Chris Barnes.
Chris wrote in the caption: “Cassie was out on her lunch break and observed Goldsboro’s Finest enjoying lunch with a homeless person.
“Law enforcement does so much for our community, with a lot of it going unnoticed. We see you Goldsboro P.D. Keep up the good work.”
The picture has received thousands of reactions from people all over the world.
During the conversation, the policeman learned about the miseries the poor woman was having in her life. She was discovered to have a 23-year-old son as well as a 12-year-old girl with acute liver disease.
The husband of the destitute was also homeless and was standing at the other side of the street while the officer was talking to his wife.
Michael was happy that he did something for the poor mother of the two.
He said that people usually avoid meeting and talking to the homeless, thinking that they themselves are responsible for their condition.
Speaking to CNN, he said: “Homeless people are just people who are down on their luck. It can happen to anybody.”
After the picture went viral on the web, it came under the attention of Michael West, Senior Police Chief of the area, who commended the officer’s attitude.
West told CNN: “The circumstances around our job are often an unpleasant call to service, but this picture just shows we’re human like anyone else and any chance we get to serve the community and help people, we take that chance.
“I’m very fortunate to have Officer Rivers in our department.”
