The authorities have named the female police officer who fatally shot a young father during a traffic stop.
On Sunday, 20-year-old Daunte Wright was shot dead by a female cop during a traffic stop in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Following the incident, the police insisted the young man was stopped over expired car registration. The authorities also claimed Wright had an outstanding warrant against him at the time of the traffic stop.
During the confrontation with the police, the young man was fatally shot by a female cop who has now been identified as 48-year-old Officer Kimberly Potter.
According to the records obtained by Star Tribune, Potter is a mother-of-two and a 25-year police veteran who has been working in law enforcement in Minnesota since 1995.
Despite more than two decades of experience, however, the officer allegedly pulled the gun on the 20-year-old man by mistake while trying to tase him.
In bodycam footage from the time of the confrontation, Potter is seen saying: “Holy sh**, I shot him” after fatally shooting the young man.
As the authorities insist, the police veteran accidentally used a gun instead of a taser during the struggle with Wright after the young father attempted to flee the scene.
While Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon insisted Potter committed an “accidental discharge,” Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association Head Brian Peters went on to claim the officer made a “mistake” during the “tense moment.”
“She’s just a very dedicated, passionate, good person. It’s completely devastating. In a very tense moment, she made a mistake. It’s not her character,” he insisted.
Since the Sunday incident, it has also been revealed that Potter was involved in another police-related shooting back in 2019 when Kobe Dimock-Heisler was shot dead while charging at officers with a knife.
At the time, the senior police officer, who was last Sunday training another cop, instructed the officers involved in the shooting to “exit the residence, get into separate squad cars, turn off their body-worn cameras, and to not talk to each other”
Following an investigation, no charges were filed against the officers involved in the shooting.
According to Star Tribune, Potter is a mother of two adult sons who lives in Minneapolis with her husband who used to work as a police officer.
As of this writing, it is not clear whether the 48-year-old will face any charges over the death of Daunte Wright.
