Officials were caught on camera barricading a screaming woman inside her home amid the novel coronavirus outbreak in China.
In the footage, the authorities were seen using thick iron bars to barricade the door leading to the apartment of an unidentified woman in an attempt to prevent her from leaving and spreading the deadly virus.
The incident occurred in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, where the police have warned residents to stay away from the home of the woman and her family after they have returned home from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak.
As the officers were barricading the door of the family’s apartment, the woman inside was heard screaming whereas one of the officers warned her not to come out.
On the sealed door of the home, the authorities have also placed a warning sign that read: “This family came back from Wuhan. Stay away, no contact.”
While the scene might look like something taken from an apocalypse movie, similar incidents have been reported across China.
In another instance that took place in Beijing, a family home was put on a lockdown whereas officials used wooden planks and nails to block the entrance.
According to human rights activist Fengsuo Zhou, he had seen similar incidents take place in several different parts of the country whereas he slammed the government for severe measures that were allegedly taken to cover up the criticism that the authorities didn’t act in time to suppress the outbreak.
“People are feeling desperate and angry. The Chinese government is more focused on censorship than public welfare because they know their credibility is challenged,” the activist said in an interview with Metro.co.uk.
“They have covered up the crucial information too long. Doctors were censured by police for talking about the pandemic one month ago.”
