A 73-year-old woman with a heart problem managed to beat killer coronavirus that has taken the lives of at least 490 people and infected more than 25,000.
Jaimuay Sae-ung was the first Thai to catch coronavirus in the country. Her family members were concerned she may lose the battle after she had visited Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak.
The elderly woman said to local media that she was suffering from exhaustion and fever. She even thought it was a sign of heart disease.
But when she went to Nakhon Pathom Hospital, it was confirmed by doctors that she had coronavirus.
In an interview with Sky News, Mrs. Sae-ung, who developed pneumonia, said: “I was confused why I had to be in the [isolation] room. There were two to three layers of glass.”
The mother-of-seven also said that she got scared of the strict procedures especially when she was quarantined. Doctors wore protective suits and only the only visible part of their bodies was their eyes, she said to The Bangkok Post.
Her condition improved after only three days, and she was finally discharged after nine days.
Speaking about her recovery, Mrs. Sae-ung’s daughter said to Sky News: “It’s one in a million – we are the luckiest.
“I don’t know how to explain it – I can only say we are so lucky. I feel happy and I feel uplifted.”
In some patients with long-term illnesses or elderly people, the virus can result in pneumonia, an infection that causes the lungs to swell up and accumulate fluid. This makes it difficult to breathe and can be life-threatening.
While tests have shown humans contracted the infection from animals being sold at a market in Wuhan, Mrs. Sae-ung said she didn’t visit any fresh markets during her trip.
