A centenarian from Romania has received the title of the world’s oldest man after the death of Bob Weighton, who passed away at the age of 112.
111-year-old Dumitru Comanescu, the new oldest man in the world, says that love is the secret to long life.
The great-grandfather, who was born on November 8, 1908, and now lives at the Bucharest Center for Seniors, said: “I feel honored and blessed to be, officially, the oldest man in the world and to represent Romania at the highest level! It’s incredible!”
He also said that the secret to his long and beautiful life was the love of his wife, children, and grandchildren. “I hope you will outgrow me,” he told his fans.
According to Romanian Insider, Mr. Comanescu graduated from university in 1933 and worked in plant pathology for seven long decades.
The super-centenarian has lived through a number of historical moments including WWI and WWII, the Soviet Union’s occupation of Romania from 1944 to 1958, and many Romanian military dictatorships.
Earlier this year, Mr. Comanescu had been declared as the oldest Romanian citizen of Bucharest and received an honorary plaque as an homage to his life, and also awarded around €1,046.
The Guinness World Records have confirmed Mr. Comanescu’s status as the oldest man in the world after 112-year-old Bob Weighton passed away from cancer.
Mr. Weighton had only received the title in February after Chitetsu Watanabe from Japan, 112, died at his apartment. He celebrated his final birthday on March 29 behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
His grandson Magnus described him as a ‘witty, kind, knowledgeable, conversationalist father, grandfather and great grandfather.’
The world’s oldest verified person was Jeanne Calment from France, who was born in 1875 and passed away in 1997 at the age of 122.
