David Arnold is a 74 years old man who lives in Balsham.
He had pledged a year ago that he would only wear shorts to spread awareness and raise funds for a charity that is very dear to his heart.
In the month of October in the year 2018, he lost his 35 years old niece because of ataxia.
Ataxia is a disease that affects the nervous system as it is a rare degenerative disease.
Louisa Arnold, his niece, was just 7 years old when she was diagnosed with her disease.
She had to suffer from the illness from a very young age, which her body to lose physical movement and speech abilities as the nervous tissue in her spinal cord was affected.
It was on New Year’s Eve of 2018 when he decided and took the pledge to wear shorts for the entire year of 2019.
And let us tell you, he did not fail in doing it.
Even though the year was cold for a long time, he did not give up on his pledge and through that, he was able to raise £4,800.
He received £1,000 alone from one donor which is a massive thing.
He had only planned to raise ¼ of the money he was able to raise originally.
Once he had to go to a funeral.
So, he took special permission from the family of the deceased and got a pair of shorts tailored to wear at the funeral.
He says “Yes it felt weird so many times standing there alone in the middle of the crowd, in the sun and even in the cold, wearing a pair of shorts.
But there were some people who understood me.”
