A 911 operator who intentionally hung up on people who were having an emergency is facing prison time.
25-year-old Precious Stephens from New Orleans has been charged with interfering with emergency communication and malfeasance in the office after hanging up on callers without getting them the help they needed during the time she worked as a 911 operator for the Orleans Parish Communications District.
As of this writing, the New Orleans Police Department has already obtained an arrest warrant for the negligent operator, whereas the woman could be facing up to five-and-a-half years in prison if convicted.
According to the reports, the police began investigating Stephens after the dispatch center she was working at reported her for allegedly hanging up on callers without redirecting their calls or taking down their information.
“Working as a 911 operator with the Orleans Parish Communications District at the time, she is wanted for allegedly disconnecting 911 calls deliberately without obtaining necessary emergency information or relaying such emergencies to the other dispatchers for aid,” the New Orleans Police Department revealed in a press release.
“The report was taken on August 23, 2021.
”As it has since been confirmed, Stephens’ actions came to light after the Orleans Parish Communications District performed a test and analyzed a random sample of 911 calls.
After noticing that the dispatcher neglected her duties and hung up on callers looking for help, the district immediately fired Stephens and handed the case over to the police.
As of this writing, the police have yet to arrest the 25-year-old. Anyone with information about her whereabouts is urged to contact Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
