Alec Baldwin broke down in tears as he recalled the tragic moment he accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his movie Rust.
In an interview with George Stephanopoulos of ABC, the actor revealed the horror he felt when he grabbed the gun and it suddenly went off.
“I think back, I think: ‘What could I have done?’” he expressed.
Baldwin insisted that he did not pull the trigger but said that it seemed to fire on its own.
“The trigger wasn’t pulled, I didn’t pull the trigger,” he said, pausing from time to time to wipe his tears and collect himself.
“I would never point a gun at anyone at point a trigger at them, never.”
It is still not known why the gun was loaded with a bullet.
“Someone put a live bullet in the gun – a bullet that wasn’t even supposed to be on the property,” he continued.
According to reports, the bullet that took the life of Hutchins may have been a homemade bullet that the armorer supplied from another movie where makeshift ammunition was used by actors to train at a firing range.
An affidavit filed by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said that detectives are currently investigating whether Seth Kenney may have provided the film with recycled bullets from a previous set.
During the interview, Baldwin said of the cinematographer: “She was someone who was loved by everyone who worked with and liked by everyone who worked with – and admired.
“Even now I find it hard to believe, it just doesn’t seem real to me.”
When the actor was asked if the incident was the worst thing that ever happened to him, he responded: “Yes. Yes, yes.”
