Arnold Schwarzenegger has finally opened up about how his 25-year marriage ended after his affair with their family housekeeper.

While the Terminator star was still married to Maria Shriver, he had a secret relationship with their housekeeper Mildred Patricia Baena, who gave birth to their son Joseph Baena in 1997.

At first, the actor believed that Joseph was the son of Mildred’s husband but he eventually realized that the boy, now 26, was his.

Schwarzenegger told his son about his discovery during a counseling but the revelation ended their 25-year marriage.

The former couple said in a statement at that time: “We are continuing to parent our four children together. They are the light and center of both of our lives.”

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the actor opened up about the turbulent times but insisted that there had been no dramatic altercation leading to the end of his decade-long marriage.

The Hollywood star said that even though it was his mistake that ended their marriage, he still has a profound love for the former First Lady of California.

“My chapter with Maria will continue on forever,” he expressed. “Even though it’s a different relationship, there’s no reason for me to feel anything other than love for her.”

He also said that they prioritized their children during those challenging times.

“We always made it very clear that the kids should not suffer because of (the affair),” he shared.

“And she has her things, her relationship, I have mine (with Heather Milligan), but we always communicate about the kids, about the holidays, about birthday parties and Mother’s Day parties and Christmas,” Schwarzenegger added.

The star also addressed his affair in Netflix documentary ‘Arnold’ which was released earlier this year.

In the series, he said that his ‘heart stopped’ when Shriver mentioned the rumors about Joseph being his son.

“I thought my heart stopped. And then I told the truth. ‘Yes Maria, Joseph is my son’. She was obviously crushed by that,” he revealed.

“I have caused enough pain for my family, because of my f*** up,” he continued. “Everyone had to suffer. Maria had to suffer, the kids had to suffer, Joseph, his mother, everyone. I’m going to have to live with that for the rest of my life.”
