A father has left people divided after he shared how he banned his 19-year-old daughter from their family home for the Christmas holidays.
Sharing his story on Reddit, the 49-year-old father explained that his daughter, Sydney, has never gotten along with her 16-year-old brother, Lucas.
He said that his daughter is a great kid and that she works hard to meet her goals but when it comes to her brother, she’s ‘awful.’
The frustrated dad continued: “She picks on him constantly, calls him stupid, belittles his accomplishments, and is just generally mean.”
He also explained that he and his wife have tried everything to fix the siblings’ problem, including counseling for them separately.
“We’ve tried any consequence/incentive we could think of, and finally we just tried to keep them separate as much as possible,” he continued.
When Sydney came home from college for Thanksgiving, she started teasing Lucas right away about his clothes.
“She told him he’d never get into a good college, and generally took every opportunity to pick a fight. It was exhausting,” he continued.
The father said that his daughter is planning to come home for Christmas but he told her that if she can’t be nice to her brother, she can’t come home.
“She thought I was joking at first and kind of laughed and said something about not being able to promise that, and I said that’s fine, don’t come home then,” he said.
The father was left wondering if he was in the wrong but many Reddit users were quick to assure him that he was doing the right thing.
One person commented: “You aren’t forbidding her from coming home, you’re just insisting that she refrain from bullying her brother or not come home. She is choosing not to come home rather than not be a bully.”
Another said: “You told her she could come home as long as she’s nice to her brother. She would rather isolate herself and throw a tantrum than even attempt to treat him respectfully. That’s not your fault.”
