A couple who revealed that they charge their daughter rent for refusing to go to college have sparked a lengthy debate about financial responsibility and parenting.
Erika and Cody Archie from Texas took to TikTok and shared their decision to charge their 19-year-old daughter Kylee $200 a month after she graduated from high school.
“Two hundred bucks a month is plenty cheap to live like a grub in your parents’ house,” the father expressed.
The couple said they agreed that the approach would teach their daughter important lessons when it comes to financial responsibilities.
“That’s cheaper than she eats in food,” the mom continued, adding that their daughter must learn how to manage bills.
But their decision to charge the teen has left people divided, but many agreed with them and shared their own similar experiences.
One person commented: “It’s all good. But if she’s paying rent then she can come and go as she pleases. Curfew, other “parenting” rules go out the window. She’s now a tenant.”
Another said: “I had to pay rent after I graduated until I left for the Marine Corps. I turned out all right I think.”
A third said: “If you’re not studying you’re working, if you’re working I’m not the only one paying bills in the house. Treat adults like adults.”
Others were quick to disagree, with one person commenting: “A definite no for me… I know it’s rare, but I will forever help my kids… no matter the age.”
Another wrote: “You decided to have a child…not the other way around. Where else would they go if they didn’t reside home with you?”
Others also gave some suggestions, such as returning the money to their daughter.
One wrote: “Collect rent then give it back when they move out.”
Another shared: “I paid $100 a month, then my parents gave it back to me as a wedding present. It really helped to get started.”
