A couple married for almost 64 years spent their final moments holding hands before they died only hours apart.
Trent Winstead, 88, and Dolores Winstead, 83, died in Nashville’s Saint Thomas West Hospital only a month before their 64th wedding anniversary.
Days before they died, Trent was admitted to hospital because of his failing kidneys and his wife stayed by his side holding his hand.
However, dialysis weakened Trent’s heart and he was taken to intensive care.
Dolores and their two children, Sheryl and Eddie, watched his health condition deteriorate. Days later, Dolores started throwing up and complaining of a headache.
She suffered a severe brain aneurysm and was connected to a ventilator but her condition worsened. Staff decided to place the couple in the same room so they could hold each other’s hands and spend their final moments together.
Dolores and Trent were photographed holding hands before they passed away only hours apart.
On December 9, Dolores stopped breathing at 9:10 pm.
Their son Eddie leaned over and told his father that his wife had passed away.
Trent then blew a kiss to Dolores and passed away only hours later.
Speaking to the Washington Post, daughter Sheryl said: “Because she was gone, he just could not handle it. We just watched him die.
“I hadn’t thought about it this way at the time. (He) literally, he died of a broken heart. Never in a million years did I think I was going to come out of the hospital with neither one.”
One person commented: “What a beautiful story for such a wonderful couple. Prayers for both of them and their family. In a world were fifty percent don’t stay married it’s great to see two who did and were still obviously in love.”
Another wrote: “How beautiful that this loving couple remained committed for so many years. Continued blessings to them both, and their families.”
