The Pirates of the Caribbean star’s lawyers said that he is ‘pleased to close the door on this painful chapter’ after his ex-wife Amber Heard agreed to pay $1 million defamation settlement.
Lawyers Camille Vasquez and Benjamin Chew said Johnny Depp is happy that the ‘painful chapter’ is finally over as they confirmed that the actor would donate the money to charity.
“We are pleased to formally close the door on this painful chapter for Mr Depp, who made clear throughout this process that his priority was about bringing the truth to light,” the statement said.
“The jury’s unanimous decision and the resulting judgment in Mr. Depp’s favor against Ms. Heard remain fully in place.
“The payment of one million dollars – which Mr Depp is pledging and will donate to charities – reinforces Ms Heard’s acknowledgment of the conclusion of the legal system’s rigorous pursuit for justice.”
The Aquaman star was ordered to pay $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, which was later reduced to $365,000.
Depp was ordered to pay $2 million after Heard countersued for defamation.
Their legal teams have made discussions to avoid another trial after Heard filed an appeal.
Last weekend, a deal was made with both sides agreeing to release a statement.
A source close to Heard told Mail Online: “Amber is now looking forward to moving on with her life as she planned to do six years ago.
“She wants to put this unfortunate episode behind her and turn to what she loves in life: her career, her family and her causes.”
In an Instagram post, Heard said that her life ‘was destroyed’ by the court cases.
“I make this decision having lost faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony served as entertainment and social media fodder,” she wrote.
“Time is precious and I want to spend my time productively and purposefully. For too many years I have been caged in an arduous and expensive legal process, which has shown itself unable to protect me and my right to free speech.”
She also thanked her ‘outstanding appellate and original trial teams’ for their efforts.point 189 | 1
