A man has shared how his family got mad at him after he decided to propose to his girlfriend at his uncle’s funeral.

Sharing his story on Reddit, the man explained that his uncle was the one who gave him the courage to ask his girlfriend out.

“My uncle was one of the greatest people I’ve ever met. I have so many good memories with him,” he said, adding that his uncle previously ‘joked about how his funeral should be a party.’

The man continued: “He believed funerals shouldn’t be so sad and gloomy. Celebrate the life the dead lived not to grieve over them being gone, and be glad they existed.”

He then explained that he started dating his girlfriend because of his uncle, who said that he wanted to see him get married before he passed away.

Wanting to honor his uncle’s memory, he decided to propose to his girlfriend during his funeral.

“My girlfriend knew my uncle for five years and saw him as a father figure as well (she didn’t have one and we both started dating when we were 16) and although she didn’t have prior knowledge of my proposal, she wasn’t shocked by it and thought it was cute.”

While his girlfriend accepted his proposal, his family were left furious for popping the question at his uncle’s funeral.

He was also banned from attending the wake.

“I’m really bummed out I missed out on it and most of my family isn’t on speaking terms with me,” he added.

He was left wondering if he was the one in the wrong for proposing to his girlfriend at his uncle’s funeral, so he took to Reddit to ask other people’s opinion.

One person commented: “I get why it felt like you had your uncle’s approval, but funerals are for the loved ones as well and it just seems in poor taste to make that event about you. I have to side with the family on this one.”

Another said: “Wildly inappropriate. Although probably worth making sure your family all knows the backstory, which does soften it a little.”
