A woman has shared how her family mocked her baby girl’s name because they thought it sounded like a pasta dish.
Writing on Reddit, the woman admitted that she was left worried her daughter might get bullied at school because of the name she picked for her child.
She explained that she and her husband chose the name ‘Elizabeth’ for their daughter. They also picked ‘Jane’ as her middle name.
But during her pregnancy, her husband’s mother died so they have decided to change their daughter’s middle name as a tribute so her middle name became Anya Jane.
Only days after Elizabeth was born, the family started calling her Liz. But the mother’s sister mentioned that the couple named their baby after lasagna (Liz Anya).
“I have asked them to stop because one day Liz will know they’re making fun of her and she’ll be hurt,” she wrote. “My sister told me if I didn’t want people to make fun of her name then I shouldn’t have named her what I did.
“They won’t stop and every time I protest they remind me that I’m the one who named her so I’ve made my bed.”
The mother said that she stopped talking to her family and that they have been texting her telling her that she was being cruel for keeping them from seeing the baby.
One Reddit user commented: “It’s OK that you didn’t catch it. Your family should drop it once you said it bothered you.”
Another wrote: “They are being unreasonable and cruel to taunt an infant by calling her names. You could send them an email and tell them that they can see the baby again when they address her by her given name. If they call her Lasagna, end the call and put them in timeout for a week, two weeks, or whatever works for you.”
