‘Am I Wrong For Changing My Adopted Son’s Name So That My Biological Child Could Use It’

A father has been branded as “the worst dad” after revealing he had changed his adopted son’s name so that his biological child could use it instead.

August is a father of two who asked Reddit if he was in the wrong for making the decision to change his adopted son’s name after the boy had been using it for several years.

The reason for the name change? August has welcomed a “miracle” biological child with his wife after years of struggling to conceive and he wants the son he fathered to carry on the name August – the same first name that has been in the family for five generations.

The man also explained that his adopted son’s original name was Thien, but he and his wife decided to change it to August VI thinking they would never welcome a son of their own.

“My name is August V. My name goes back five generations now and it was always my plan to make my son August VI,” the man wrote.

“My wife and I were horrified to find out I was essentially firing blanks and was told I would essentially never be able to father kids – heartbreaking. We started the adoption process right away looking in mostly foreign countries so it would go faster, and we were able to adopt a baby boy from Vietnam.

“His first name was Thien but my wife agreed to change his name to August VI. We also agreed we would let nature take its course because miracles can happen. Seven years later, a miracle did happen and my wife turned up unexpectedly pregnant.

“I decided with my wife’s agreement that because we now have a bio son, it is better to give the firstborn biological son the family name.”

After the name change, the parents were forced to inform their adopted son’s school and the word of it had spread throughout the community, raising eyebrows and speculations about the father’s love for his children.

“We’re now essentially social pariahs and the subject of massive gossip – accusations of not loving Thien enough,” the father continued while insisting that Thien didn’t care about the name change because everyone allegedly called him by his original name.

After asking the internet if he and his wife really were the ones in the wrong, the man was quickly slammed and accused of being a lousy father who didn’t deserve to be a parent to Thien.

“You are the a**hole. People like you really shouldn’t adopt,” someone wrote.

“You dragged your kid to a legal proceeding to make sure he knows his place will always be less than your bio son,” another said.

A third raged on: “What you did was so disgusting, this post has to be fake. I can’t believe any judge would approve the name change under those circumstances, even if there are parents vile enough to request such a thing. If true that poor kid is growing up feeling inferior to your bio child.”
