A disappointed woman sought advice on the internet after her fiancé proposed to her with a “cheap” engagement ring.
As the lady in question insisted in her Mumsnet post, she had low expectations when it came to her boyfriend’s selection of jewelry for his proposal.
However, she was left feeling downright underwhelmed when her fiancé popped the big question using a “basically cheap” ring made of sterling silver with cubic zirconia.
According to the woman, the ring reminds her of a cheap costume prop.
While she admitted she doesn’t wear jewelry often, the woman went on to slam her partner saying she knows he could afford a much better ring than the one he chose because he’s earning good money.
“So recently engaged… well 2 months or so… I hate to admit but when I saw the ring my immediate feeling was disappointment. It looked cheap like costume jewelry and not what I expected,” she wrote.
“I’m not a jewelry wearer in general so my expectations about a ring were low. I tried the ring on and it was a bit big. He said he would get it resized for me… so 2 months has gone past and no mention of the ring or fixing it.
“Out of curiosity today I researched the hallmark on the ring. It says sterling silver cubic zirconia. Basically cheap. I know an engagement is not about money but I know he can afford so much more and is extravagant in his own spending on himself.”
The woman went on to share an update saying she confronted her boyfriend about the ring. In response, the fiancé allegedly got defensive and branded the woman as “ungrateful.”
After the lady shared her story on the forum, she received plenty of mixed responses. While some called her materialistic and selfish, others suggested she was right to expect more from someone she was about to spend the rest of her entire life with.
“If it was all he could afford it wouldn’t bother me. But if he can afford more, and spends more on himself normally, then I would be worried it was part of a pattern of behavior where he thinks he deserves more financially than you,” someone wrote.
“Cripes, cubic zirconia and sterling silver? maybe this is the sign of things to come? Tight with money, tight with love,” another said.
A third argued: “The fact that you ‘needed’ to look at the price says that maybe you value the financial security rather than the love of the man himself.”
