The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were left disappointed as they wanted a suite of apartments at Windsor Castle but were given Frogmore Cottage instead, a new royal book claimed.
According to Lady Elizabeth Anson, a close friend of the Queen, the Sussexes hoped for apartments at the royal residence but the late monarch gave them the cottage instead.
She also described the home in Windsor as a ‘big deal’ to Her Majesty.
The latest claim was written in ‘The New Royals’ book written by royal author Katie Nicholls. It explores the relationships between the new Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and the newly crowned King Charles.
In an extract of the book shared by Mail Online, Lady Elizabeth – who passed away in 2020 – is quoted saying: “The cottage was a big deal. The Queen’s entrance into the gardens is right next to their cottage. It is essentially her back yard, her solitude, and her privacy.”
“She was giving that up in gifting Harry and Meghan Frogmore Cottage. We all thought it was very big of her,” Lady Elizabeth continued.
“She said, ‘I hope they’ll respect it.’”
This comes as Harry and Meghan return to the US after the Queen’s state funeral.
The death of the late monarch brought Charles, William and Harry together again as they marched behind her coffin.
TV host Gayle King, a friend of the Duchess of Sussex, said after: “There have been efforts on both sides… to sort of make this right.
“Big families always go through drama, always go through turmoil. It remains to be seen — are they going to be drawn closer together or are they going to be drawn apart?
“I have no idea, I have no inside information on that, but I will tell you this: It was good to see Harry standing with his family.”
