A wife has shared how she was left frustrated after discovering that her husband had been lying about his salary for 15 long years.
Sharing her story on Mumsnet to ask for advice on how to handle the situation, the woman explained that her husband told her “he earned £40k ($51k) a decent comfortable salary for where we are in the north of England.
“And combined with what I earn a very good joint income. It actually turns out my husband earns over £15,000 ($19k) less and I’m shocked although a lot of things are starting to make sense.”
The woman also explained that her husband pays all the bills while she pays everything else, like their children’s needs, their clothes, things for their home, holidays, and any extras.
Her husband constantly claimed to be broke so she started to suspect that he was hiding something from her.
“I have offered multiple times to also on top of everything else I pay for to pay a share of the bills, on the provision that he shows me all his ingoings and outgoing plus any savings he has so we can make a proper budget. He has always point-blank refused,” she went on.
After a heated argument over their finances, they finally had a proper discussion and he said that “he only earns 25k a year take-home pay after tax and deductions on the 40k a year.”
The wife now feels ‘totally at a loss’ and ‘so stupid’ for believing her husband but Mumsnet users were quick to reassure her that she was reasonable to be upset.
One person commented: “I absolutely hate lies. I can’t see anything but the mistruth. For me personally, I don’t know how you can go forward. Once you start thinking, what else has he lied about? you’ll start to question everything.”
Another wrote: “You can hardly blame him for this mess when you have been too lazy to check? Over the years when he claimed to be broke you obviously never sat down and did a line-by-line of expenses.”
