Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter has passed away at the age of 96, The Carter Center confirmed after she entered hospice care at her Georgia home.
Her husband of 77 years, former President Jimmy Carter, 99, paid a heartbreaking tribute to his wife.
In a statement released by The Carter Center, he said: “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it.”
The heartfelt statement continued: “As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”
Chip Carter, one of their children, said of his mother’s life: “Besides being a loving mother and extraordinary First Lady, my mother was a great humanitarian in her own right. Her life of service and compassion was an example for all Americans.”
President Joe Biden also paid tribute to the former First Lady, remembering her as a ‘dear friend.’
Taking to Twitter, the current POTUS said: “First Lady Rosalynn Carter walked her own path, inspiring a nation and the world along the way.
“On behalf of a grateful nation, we send our love to the entire Carter family and the countless people whose lives are better, fuller, and brighter because of Rosalynn Carter.”
Former President Donald Trump also said: “Over a life spanning nearly a century, Rosalynn Carter earned the admiration and gratitude of our entire nation.”
He also mentioned her various roles from a US Navy spouse to becoming the First Lady and her service at the Carter Center.
Former First Lady Melania Trump also took to Twitter and wrote: “Rosalynn Carter leaves behind a meaningful legacy not only as First Lady but as a wife and mother. We will always remember her servant’s heart and devotion to her husband, family, and country. May she rest in peace.”
