Julia Fox has sparked a heated debate after suggesting that parents should forget about toys and buy cleaning tools for their children instead.
The 32-year-old Italian-American model and actress opened up about her parenting methods as she revealed her 19-month-old son is more interested in cleaning with her than in his own toys.
“He is actually more interested in what I’m doing,” the Uncut Gems star claimed in her viral video.
“So I suggest that everyone buy their kid a mini-mop and mini-broom and start teaching them those life skills really young, so when they enter the real world they don’t have to outsource for everything.
“And they know how to do things for themselves. I think that’s really important.”
She went on to blast the modern ways of consumerism saying “the idea of childhood was invented as a way to get parents to spend a lot of money on s*** that’s not really teaching your kid anything.”
Fox further suggested that spoiling kids with toys rather than teaching them valuable skills contributes to raising “helpless” kids who don’t know what to do.
The model’s suggestion was met with mixed reactions, whereas plenty of people agreed that teaching young children valuable life skills is better than having them rely on toys for entertainment.
“And kids actually LIKE DOING THAT STUFF. Sometimes they want those toy vacuums and brooms on their own so they can do what their parents are doing,” someone wrote.
Others, however, lashed out at the 32-year-old saying children should spend their childhoods developing and exploring rather than doing chores and learning how to work.
“So HER son doesn’t like toys so childhood for everyone else shouldn’t exist,” one person wrote in response.
“Giving kids toys that don’t necessarily have a purpose (to us) isn’t ‘pointless,’ it aids in their cognitive/physical development! Toys aren’t useless,” another said.
The third joked: “I bought my son a mop and broom etc and taught him how to cook and clean but only cuz I wanted a live in maid but if it helps him too that’s dope.”
