Kim Kardashian has claimed that many people did not know Marilyn Monroe until she wore her dress to the 2022 Met Gala.
The SKIMS founder caused controversy after she was seen wearing the Hollywood icon’s dress to the event, with some claiming that the reality star had damaged the garment.
The dress was worn by Monroe in 1962 as she sang Happy Birthday to former President John F. Kennedy.
Kardashian has then claimed that some people had never heard of the Hollywood legend until she wore the dress to the gala.
The sparkling gown was loaned to the future lawyer for the red carpet, revealing how she had to lose weight in less than a month to fit into the dress.
The mother-of-four was only allowed to wear the dress on the red carpet for the photos and she had to change right away into a replica.
But after the precious artifact was returned, visitors noticed some damage to the dress and slammed the star for wearing the original.
Kardashian defended her decision to wear Monroe’s gown, arguing that her decision has introduced the legendary icon to the new generation.
Appearing on the Today Show, she told host Savannah Guthrie that many people did not know who Marilyn Monroe was.
“That was the most shocking thing to me,” she expressed.
“That’s why I was so happy to at least have that opportunity and that Ripley’s gave me the opportunity to share this moment so that it could live on,” she added.
Kardashian also emphasized her deep respect for the Hollywood icon and the dress’ significance in American history.
“What is more American than Marilyn Monroe singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the president of the United States,” she added.
