Malia Obama has made her first carpet appearance for the very first time as a director at the Sundance Film Festival.
The eldest daughter of former President Barack Obama celebrated the premiere of her directorial debut, a movie titled The Heart, in Utah on January 17.
She sported a blue-striped shirt and long grey coat that she matched with black leggings.
Malia’s film tells the story of a grieving son who was left with a request in his late mother’s will.
In a video posted on YouTube, the 25-year-old said of her movie: “The film is about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret, but I also think it works hard to uncover where tenderness and closeness can exist in these things.
“We hope you enjoy the film and it makes you feel a bit less lonely or at least reminds you not to forget about the people who are.”
TV show Atlanta creator Donald Glover also praised Malia’s talent during a 2022 interview with Vanity Fair.
“I feel like she’s just somebody who’s gonna have really good things coming soon. Her writing style is great.”
Malia is not new to writing as she previously worked as a staff writer on Amazon Prime’s Swarm, with co-creator Janine Nabers praising her talents.
“Some of her pitches were wild as hell, and they were just so good and so funny. She’s an incredible writer. She brought a lot to the table. She’s really, really dedicated to her craft,” Nabers expressed.
Malia is not the only one in her family who was taken an interest in the movie industry.
Her parents Barack and Michelle Obama, along with Nick Krishnamurthy, Tonia Davis, and Daniel M. Stillman, were credited as executive producers for the Netflix film Leave the World Behind.
