A man came across a fortune while going through a safe that he found inside a storage unit that he bought at an auction.

Storage Wars stars Dan and Laura Dotson revealed that one bargain hunter secured a unit for just $500 only to come across a safe containing $7.5 million.

While safes found in auctioned storage units are typically empty, the safe in that case was overflowing with cash.

“My husband works for a guy and he bought a unit from you for $500 (£390) and it had a safe in it,” Dan’s acquaintance allegedly told him.

“The first person that they called to open the safe couldn’t, or didn’t. They called a second person and when that person opened it up … inside the safe they’re normally empty, but this time it wasn’t empty. It had $7.5 million (£5.8 million) cash inside.”

The storage unit’s new owners’ surprises, however, didn’t end there.

After calling two locksmiths to open the safe, the new owners were contacted by the storage unit’s previous owners and offered $600,000 to return $7.5 million in cash.

While the new owners reportedly declined, they eventually settled on the agreement that they would keep just $1.2 million and return the rest of the sum.

After sharing the story with his fans, Dan asked the viewers to weigh in and think for a second what they would do with the money if they became the new owners of the loaded safe.

Many people have since suggested that they would keep all of the money. Others warned, on the other hand, that “dirty money” was surely involved and that they could get in serious trouble with the previous owners if they chose not to return any of the cash.

“I’d keep it! Why the hell didn’t they claim it, why the hell would they let it sit until someone bought the locker?” someone wrote.

“If they had that much money, why didn’t they pay for the storage unit? Why would you put money in there anyway,” another pondered.

A third suggested: “The original owner and/or his lawyer knew the money was there. They just didn’t expect the unit to be sold. When it was auctioned off, they learned who the buyer was. I suspect the lawyer made it very clear to that buyer that a deal was better than a death. Know what I mean?”
