Michael J Fox, 62, received a standing ovation when he took to the stage at the 2024 British Academy Film Awards to present Best Film to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
When he entered the stage in a wheelchair, the ‘Back To The Future’ star received a warm round of applause from Hollywood’s biggest stars including Bradley Cooper, Margot Robbie, and Barry Keoghan.
He appeared to be touched by the welcome as he revealed the nominees and the winner.
Fox previously walked the red carpet with his wife of 35 years, Travey Pollan.
He said while presenting the prize: “Five films were nominated in this category tonight and all five have something in common. They are the best of what we do.
“No matter who you are or where you’re from, these films can bring us together. There’s a reason why they say movies are magic because movies can change your day. It can change your outlook. Sometimes it can change your life.”
It was in 1991 when Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 29. He kept his condition private for several years before going public in 1998.
Last year, the actor released a documentary on Apple TV+ and shared details about his disease.
Speaking about his documentary’s BAFTA nomination, Fox said: “I would say it’s a gift and people would look at me and I’d say it’s a gift that keeps on taking, but it’s a gift.”
The actor, who founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation, has been praised for his efforts in a bid to find cure for Parkinson’s.
“I realized I had to turn it around and turn it into something and make it some positive thing that affected other people in a positive way,” Fox said.
“So I think that’s why I started the foundation, but it took me a long time to get there.”
