A mother has asked the internet if she was in the wrong after turning down her daughter’s request for a kidney.
The 38-year-old woman in question said she recently found out her estranged daughter, 21, has been suffering from kidney failure.
Though the pair had not talked to each other in over three years, the girl allegedly approached her mom in hope that they could reconcile and that the woman could donate her kidney to her.
The mother, however, turned down her request saying she doesn’t want to be forced into helping her “ungrateful” child.
“We have been estranged for 3 years, and it was due mainly to the fact that she was taking her health issues, as well as her fights with her dad and stepmom out on me,” she explained.
The woman went on to explain that her ex-husband refused to get tested for compatibility while insisting it was her job to sacrifice her kidney because she’s the mother.
“And so he and everybody else just want it to be my kidney.point 162 | I tried to communicate to my daughter that I’m afraid of surgery – I was too new to take that much time from work so I’d likely be working while in pain.point 298 |
She replied asking ‘Doesn’t Ethan [the mother’s new partner] make a lot of money?’ I told her again how risky surgery was and she said, echoing my friends ‘I don’t care – this isn’t about you,’” she added.point 200 | 1
“I was so furious from that conversation that when I went to see the doctor and the doctor asked if somebody was coercing me I told him that at this point I’d rather die than continue to serve my ungrateful rude daughter. I said I indeed felt coerced and if I did it, I’d probably have burning resentment towards the recipient, and the doctors if I woke up in pain.”
While the woman eventually got tested, she discovered she was not a compatible donor at all. After telling this to her friends and her ex, however, they all accused her of lying because she clearly didn’t want to help her daughter out.
The mother has since asked Reddit if she was in the wrong for being so harsh on her daughter only to be met with mixed responses.
“I think OP is hiding a lot of information that will paint her in a bad light. This write up is full of narcissistic behavior,” one reader argued.
Another wrote: “As I understand it: You had a child as a teenager.point 169 | That child apparently has been having health issues for some time.point 225 |
You went no contact on her the moment she was legally considered an adult.point 61 | Somehow, you’re considered the victim here, and the daughter is wrong for feeling neglected by two parents who clearly don’t give a f**k about her health and ‘took her anger out’ on you both for not caring about her health.point 261 |
You two are absolutely awful ‘parents’ who have replaced your first child with your new families.point 86 | ”point 89 | 1
A third said: “Do you think she isn’t scared? 21 yo and facing a deadly disease. It’s obvious that you resent her for being born and holding you back. It is not her fault.”
