A man asked the internet if he was in the wrong for turning down his wife’s request to name their child after her mother.
According to the 32-year-old father-to-be in question, he and his wife got into a heated argument when their unborn baby’s name was brought up during a casual conversation.
As the husband explained, his wife said she was adamant about naming their daughter after her mother – Princess.
While the man claims he understands why his partner wants to honor her mother by naming her child after her, he insists that the name doesn’t seem appropriate and that his daughter could get bullied because of it in the future.
“For context, I, 32 male, and my wife, 28 female, found out that we are expecting in January of this year. Recently, at one of her ultrasound appointments, we found out that we are having a baby girl,” the man wrote in his viral Reddit post.
“A few nights ago my wife and I began to talk about possible baby names. She mentioned her mother, Ana, and asked me how I would feel if our daughter inherited her name.”
Thinking there was nothing wrong with the name Ana, the man agreed until his wife once again brought up the topic the next day.
“I figured that the conversation was over after I agreed, but just last night at dinner my wife brought it up again. She said that she thinks it’s so meaningful that I am letting our daughter have ‘her grandmother’s middle name.’ When she said this I was shocked,” the man added.
“I had assumed my wife was talking about her mother’s first name, not her middle name. This might not have been a huge deal, but my mother in law’s middle name is – wait for it – Princess.”
After realizing what his wife was talking about, the husband immediately shut down her proposal which led to a big argument during which the mom-to-be allegedly broke into tears and called the man a “disgrace” to her family.
“I told her that she was acting crazy, and that I would be fine with the name Ana but Princess is not a name I am comfortable giving our newborn,” the stressed-out husband continued.
“She’s been avoiding me all day, and I’m starting to wonder if I’m going nuts. I don’t want our kid to be bullied, but family is so important to me and my wife.”
After asking the internet for advice, the man received heaps of support and kind comments from people who agreed that the name was not appropriate and that the wife should choose something they are both comfortable with instead.
“People forget that kids grow up, can you imagine an adult working in a potentially corporate environment with that name? Kids aren’t dolls or pets,” someone said.
“You’re the child’s parent too, you also have a say. Your wife isn’t thinking of the child, that’s for sure. It’s a stupid name and you have the right to veto it,” another wrote.
A third suggested: “You both have to agree on a name it’s not all about her. And yes, Princess is a terrible name your child would hate you for it.”
