An expecting mother has opened up about her emotional distraught after her friend stole the name she had picked for her baby a long time ago.
While some people come up with names for their babies after their birth, others plan them for years or even decades before they actually become parents.
One such person is the lady who asked Reddit users if she was in the wrong for feeling incredibly upset after entrusting her future baby’s name to her friend only for the woman to “steal” it and use it for her own baby before she got the chance to.
“My close friends took our baby name. When I heard the name I was shocked. I know nobody owns a name, but this was an uncommon, country-specific name,” the woman claimed in her post.
“We told them that this is our name! They have no ties to this country. During their pregnancy, we would ask them what names are they thinking about and they always said, ‘oh we don’t know.’”
As the mom-to-be explained, she never expected her friend to steal her baby name which is why she was left deeply shocked and hurt.
To make matters worse, her husband seemed to side with their friends and think it was “funny” how she reacted to the news.
“My husband says we can’t use the name anymore because we are close friends and it would be weird, [and would look] like we took their name. He also thinks it’s funny that I’m upset,” she added.
“Has anyone ever experienced this? Why am I feeling so sad? Would it be weird if I still use the name?”
After asking the internet for advice, people were quick to voice their support for the mother while suggesting that real friends wouldn’t steal her favorite name like that.
Some also urged the mom to do what she wants and use the name for her own baby should she wish to.
After a while, however, the woman came up with an update in which she explained that her husband forbade her from using the same name as their friends because he was afraid it would jeopardize their friendship.
“I was upset, but they were initially friends of my husband. He made it clear that he would rather protect the friendship. I just have a bad taste in my mouth for them now,” she said.
