In his column, he said that he hated Meghan Markle on a ‘cellular level’ and even dreamed of seeing her paraded without clothes on while feces was thrown at her.

The article has received the most complaints about a newspaper column ever and now the newspaper says that they ‘regret’ publishing the former Top Gear host’s remarks.

“Columnists’ opinions are their own, but as a publisher, we realize that with free expression comes responsibility,” The Sun said in a statement.

“We at The Sun regret the publication of this article and we are sincerely sorry.”

The news outlet also said that the column has been removed from their website and archives.

“I last Saturday’s Sun, Jeremy Clarkson wrote a comment article about the Duchess of Sussex. It provoked a strong response and led to a large number of complaints to Ipso, the independent press regulator,” the statement continued.

This comes after the column, in which Clarkson said he hated the Duchess of Sussex, became the Independent Press Standards Organization’s (IPSO) most complained-about article.

According to IPSO, the article has received more than 20,000.

ITV boss Kevin Lygo also slammed the remarks at a Broadcasting Press Guild lunch, saying: “It was awful what he said and I think even he has now acknowledged that. He should apologize.

Clarkson previously acknowledged the mistake but instead of apologizing, he said he’d “rather put my foot in it.”

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: “Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it. In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people.

“I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future.”
