Paloma Faith did not hold back as she slammed the movie The Little Mermaid after watching it with her kids.
The 41-year-old British singer took to social media and shared her thoughts on the live-action film starring Halle Bailey.
Even though she praised the actress for her impressive performance, she said that the movie was sending a wrong message to young girls.
“Just seen the new Little Mermaid with my kids and while I think Halle gives a good performance and it’s great casting, as a mother of girls I don’t want my kids to think it’s ok to give up your entire voice and your powers to love a man,” she wrote.
Paloma added: “Not what I want to be teaching next gen women at all.”
The main character’s decision to give up her voice to live a life on land with Prince Eric has been carried over from the original 1989 movie but it appears the concept still does not sit well with many viewers.
Bailey also spoke out about the issue in an interview with Edition.
The star said she was excited about the movie because they have ‘definitely changed that perspective of just her wanting to leave the ocean for a boy.’
“It’s way bigger than that. It’s about herself, her purpose, her freedom, her life and what she wants,” she expressed.
“As women we are amazing, we are independent, we are modern, we are everything and above. And I’m glad that Disney is updating some of those themes.”
The Little Mermaid became the fifth-highest Memorial Day weekend opening of all time with a whopping $117.5 million in its first four days in theaters in North America.
