Police have launched an investigation into the company that organized Taylor Swift’s concerts in Brazil after a 23-year-old fan passed away amid extreme temperatures.
Ana Clara Benevides Machado reportedly collapsed on November 17 and was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Her grieving cousin told a local newspaper that she was believed to have suffered cardiac arrest.
A spokesman for the Civil Police Department of Rio de Janeiro said that the consumer delegations department had opened an inquiry into ‘the crime of endangering the life and health’ of concertgoers.
The statement read: “Event organizers will be called to testify, and other steps are underway to investigate the facts.”
The concert went on amid a record-breaking heat wave, with temperatures inside the stadium reaching 138F (58C).
Swift also appeared to be struggling to breathe during the show. In a video posted on TikTok, she turned away from the crowd and quickly took multiple gasps of air before the new song started.
Furious fans took to social media and called on T4F for access to water.
After Machado’s death, the company issued a statement and sent condolences to her loved ones.
“Yesterday night, Ana Clara felt unwell and was assisted by a team of emergency workers and paramedics, being taken to a medical center at Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium so the first aid protocol could be applied,” they said.
The statement continued: “Given the situation, the medical team opted to transfer her to Salgado Filho Hospital. After nearly an hour of emergency assistance, she regrettably died.”
The company also announced that concertgoers would be able to bring water bottles and foods inside the venue.
