A woman has shared how she reprimanded her mother-in-law after she made hurtful comments about her grandson wearing dresses.
Posting on Mumsnet, she explained that her four-year-old son has been very interested in sparkles, unicorns, glitters, and beautiful twirly whirly dresses.
She and her husband have given their son a choice and the youngster has always picked girls’ clothes. They also encouraged their son, who was going to preschool, to save his beautiful dresses for home ‘so they wouldn’t get messy.’
“During one of the weekly Skype calls today, mother-in-law went on and on and ON about my son who was wearing a dress and even started calling him the female version of his name,” the mother wrote.
The frustrated mom said that her husband asked his mother to stop but the grandmother continued to make cruel comments about the situation.
“My little boy was nearly in tears saying to me ‘Why are grandma and grandad being mean to me about my beautiful dress?’ My elder one was comforting him saying ‘Don’t worry, just come and play with me if they’re being mean. If you love it, you wear it. You look great!’
“Honestly, it nearly broke my heart to hear that!”
Mumsnet users rushed to the comments section to show their support, and many agreed that the mother-in-law was the one in the wrong.
One person commented: “Your in-laws are awful. Limit contact.”
Another said: “I’d stop contact with parents-in-law it doesn’t sound like your children benefit.”
A third said: “You’ve done the right thing. If he wants to wear a dress then fair enough. Your mouther-in-law sounds horrible.”
