Sandra Bullock has left fans heartbroken after she scattered the ashes of her late partner Bryan Randall on his birthday.
Randall’s family confirmed the news of his passing in a statement to PEOPLE. “It is with great sadness that we share that on Aug. 5, Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a three-year battle with [Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)].”
“Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private, and those of us who cared for him did our best to honor his request,” the statement continued.
“We are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors and astounding nurses who navigated the landscape of this illness with us.”
The couple’s romance started in January 2015 when they worked together on a project for Bullock’s son’s birthday party.
Even though they tried to keep their relationship private, they confirmed their status by making a joint appearance at Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston’s wedding.
In 2018, Bullock and Randall attended the Oceans 8 World Premier in New York City.
Bullock also said during an interview with Red Table Talk hosts: “I don’t want to say do it like I do it, but I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner, devoted mother. I don’t need to be told to weather a storm with a good man.”
Also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, ALS is a rare neurological disorder that affects motor neurons in the spinal cord and brain.
In a post on Instagram, Bullock’s sister Gesine Bullock-Prado said that the actress has spread the ashes of Randall at Snake River in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
She captioned her video: “Happy birthday, Bry. Sandy brought you to the river, just as she promised.”
