Selena Gomez has hit back at trolls on social media after they posted body-shaming comments about her.
The Love You Like A Love Song hitmaker took to TikTok and opened up about how her medications affect her weight.
She told her viewers that the changes in her weight are caused by lupus – an incurable condition that affects the immune system. The medication she needs to take causes her to ‘hold a lot of water weight.’
Gomez said that by opening up about her condition and struggles, she hopes it encourages “anyone out there who feels any sort of shame for exactly what they’re going through, and no one knows the real story.”
“I just want people to know that you’re beautiful, and you’re wonderful. Yeah, we have days where maybe we feel like s***, but I would rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important, and I believe that they’re what helps me,” she said.
The singer also said that she was ‘not a model and never will be.’
“And I think they’re awesome, mind you,” she continued. “I’m just definitely not that.”
Gomez also thanked her fans for understanding and supporting her.
“I don’t believe in shaming people for (their appearance) or anything, she added.”
Her video quickly went viral, with many praising the singer for giving her health the first priority.
“My weight has fluctuated so much since I started having lupus symptoms like all of that is so normal for someone who’s dealing with an autoimmune disease and I wish people would leave her alone about it,” one person commented.
“Even if she had a control over it, she looks perfectly healthy, and let’s just not normalize body shaming at all,” another wrote.
“Stop body shaming, because we never knew what people going through behind it. There’s some condition where people really have zero control on what happened to their body. Be kind. Selena, we love you, you’re beautiful,” a third added.
