Suzanne Somers’ grieving husband, Alan Hamel, has shared the reason why she was laid to rest wearing Timberland boots.
The heartbreaking news of the ‘Step by Step’ star’s passing was confirmed by her publicist, R. Couri Hay.
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Hay said: “Suzanne Somers passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of October 15th. She survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years.”
The statement continued: “Suzanne was surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family.
“Her family was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on October 16th. Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.”
She was surrounded by her family when she passed away.
Hay’s cause of death was documented as ‘breast cancer with metastasis to the brain.’ Hydrocephalus and hypertension were also listed as underlying conditions.
Her grieving husband, Alan Hamel, has since revealed that the actress was laid to rest with Timberland boots.
In an interview with PEOPLE, the 87-year-old said: “Suzanne never really had boots designed for hiking on the rocks, so I ordered the Timberland boots.”
He also explained that he personalized the footwear by “drawing on them in a few words that represented our life to some degree and made them very personal to Suzanne.”
Hamel also said that even though his late wife had ‘every Manolo Blahnik ever made,’ it would have been predictable to have her wear them when she’s laid to rest.
“Every time she put on the Timberlands, she said, ‘I am wearing you, and my boots will keep me safe,’” he added.
