Taylor Swift postponed her Eras Tour concert in Brazil after a 23-year-old fan died during her show on Friday.
In a post on Instagram, the Shake It Off hitmaker said: “I’m writing this from my dressing room in the stadium. The decision has been made to postpone tonight’s show due to the extreme temperatures in Rio.
“The safety and well being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first.”
A Taylor Swift fan tragically died while attending her concert at the Estadio Olimpico Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro on Friday night.
23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides reportedly fainted and is believed to have had a cardiac arrest, her heartbroken cousin Estela Benevides told Brazilian newspaper Fohla De Sao Paolo.
Paramedics at the scene tried to resuscitate her before she was rushed to Salgado Filho Municipal Hospital where she passed away.
The cause of death for the young woman has not yet been announced but the office of Rio’s public prosecutor said that her body was being examined.
Benevides’ tragic death shook many people in the country. She reportedly created a WhatsApp group to keep her family updated as it was her first time to fly to Rio to see Taylor Swift.
According to reports, the temperature in Rio reached 100F (37.7C) but felt more like 109F (42C).
People reacted to Benevides’ death, with many claiming it was linked to extreme heat.
Concertgoers also complained that they had been banned from bringing water into the stadium.
Elizabeth Morin, 26, described ‘sauna-like’ heat inside the stadium. “It was extremely hot. My hair got so wet from sweat as soon as I came in.
“There was a point at which I had to check my breathing to make sure I wasn’t going to pass out.”
