Tommy Dorfman has shared how she confronted Delta Air Lines staff after they ‘intentionally’ misgendered her at the airport.
It was in 2021 when the 31-year-old star, who played Ryan Shaver in 13 Reasons Why, came out as a transgender woman.
The actress recently took to social media and shared a video of herself confronting staff at LaGuardia Airport.
In the video, an employee can be heard using the pronoun ‘she’ before mistakenly using ‘he,’ prompting the actress to interrupt him.
Dorfman told the staff: “You just misgendered me again. Multiple times. Both of you have.”
The worker calmly replied: “It wasn’t intentional, but if you want to take it personal, that’s also OK” but the actress continued to express her concerns.
The staff then called out her ‘condescending’ tone and warned that if she continues: “I’ll have Port Authority escort you out of the building right this moment if you want to play that game with me.”
The staffer added: “Would you like to continue three days before Christmas? I really don’t mind,” which left Dorfman sighing.
The actress also wrote that the male worker was named Tristan and that ‘he was fine’ with the video being posted online but she did not share the name of the female staff.
“When you try to advocate for yourself at @delta and are met with [sic] even more transphobia and threats of being arrested at LaGuardia,” she captioned her now-deleted post.
“Didn’t realize it was condescending to flag a human rights violation after another employee misgendered me incessantly.”
People on social media were quick to share their thoughts on the situation, with one person commenting: “It was days before Christmas! I’m sure the airport was a scene of total mayhem. The employee seemed to have a lot to manage and I don’t believe he was intentionally misgendering Dorfman.”
Another said: “These people were working their asses off during one of the busiest travel times of the year. Their priority was getting people on planes so they could get to their loved ones on time. Try having some empathy.”
A third said: “If it was a genuine mistake the staff member would [have] apologized properly and insisted on making Tommy’s travel experience more comfortable as a way of apology for her trouble, but instead this staff member proceeded to make the situation worse by threatening to kick her out.”
