‘I Picked A Traditional Name For By Baby But People Say It Is An ‘INSULT’ – Am I The One In The Wrong For Refusing To Change It?’

Picking a name for your baby can be a difficult task especially if you find out that the moniker you wanted has a negative meaning behind it.

One mother is currently experiencing that problem as she wanted to give her son a ‘very traditional name.’

Taking on Mumsnet, the mom-to-be explained that she and her partner and they wanted to name their baby Nimrod.

However, she was told that ‘Nimrod’ is a slang for the word idiot, and now she’s having second thoughts as she doesn’t know how others would react.

“We are from Hungary where Nimród is a popular boy’s name, and we’d like to call our child Nimród,” she wrote.

“However, I’ve just learnt that in American slang ‘nimrod’ means idiot, dimwit, stupid, etc. But I’ve never heard this in the UK. I wonder how bad Nimród sounds for a native English speaker in the UK.

The mom-to-be also shared other names that they wanted but their hearts were set on Nimrod.

Her post left other parents divided, with many saying that naming their child Nimrod was not a good idea but others supported the mom’s decision.

One person commented: “I’d never heard of it as an insult and thought it sounded great – the mighty hunter – but if it’s a known put down then maybe best avoided, or used as a middle name as Americanisms have a tendency to spread here.”

Another said: “Yes, I would use Nimrod to mean idiot. Sorry.”

A third wrote: “Never heard of it as an insult. Lovely piece of music.”
